Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher

Rental Assistance Program

Our rental assistance program is officially called the "Housing Choice Voucher Program." People who participate in this program receive what are commonly called "Section 8" vouchers. This program assists over 1,300 families in Yamhill County.

The voucher program allows eligible families to find their own rental unit in the private housing market. The family pays a portion of the rent and utilities (equal to 30 percent of their adjusted monthly income), and the Housing Authority pays the balance. Both our payments and the tenant's are made directly to the landlord. The Housing Authority has a contract with HUD, which provides funding for the program. The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program is HUD's largest housing program nationwide.

The goal of the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program is to give people access to private market housing in a situation as similar to an unsubsidized tenancy as possible. Landlords choose who they rent to and can use their own lease (see our landlord page for more information). We pay the rent as long as the tenant lives in the unit and is eligible, and the rest of the tenancy is between the landlord and the tenant.
